Exhibiting Signification

Object: Stackable, Snack Set

The Stackable, Nesting, Interlocking, Connectible — or anything else with organization built into it.

The audience ranges from new homeowners, interested in ways to simplify their lives through design, to designers who wish to help them do so; those who are nostalgic about the golden age of stackable design, and those who wish to explore it’s future possibilities.

The audience would most likely have been exposed to such design at a young age through toys, dishes, or furniture.

Even as products of this kind come and go, the interest in things stackable and interlocking, doesn’t seem to wane. This ongoing fascination may be an appreciation of an obvious occurrence of function over form, or maybe a fulfillment of our constant inherent longing for organization. The interest may come from practicality, efficiency, or a need to conserve space, or simply the undeniably pleasant feeling that comes from a snap, a lock; of things falling into place.

Associated memories seem to revolve around time spent playing with toys, or outdoor and travel events.

An exhibit would touch on nostalgia, and the charm of its ingenuity, and the range of possibilities as small-scale as our snack set to as large as architecture, transportation, or city planning.
